... and the start of the ministry

Read the Summary

The Affirmation of God – “This is my son” were audible words that God spoke at Jesus’ baptism, to validate Jesus’ identity and to launch him into public ministry. It was also a foundational strength for the temptations that Jesus would soon face and overcome.

The Affirmation of John – “Behold the Lamb of God” were the words of John the Baptist to his own disciples when he encountered Jesus after the baptism. Jesus’ mission was known in heaven all along, but now it was beginning to take root on earth.

The First Invitations – from Jesus were to Andrew and Peter, two brothers who made their living as fishermen. Andrew was one of John’s disciples and with John’s encouragement left to follow Jesus. Then Andrew told Peter who would later become a pillar of the church.

The First Miracle – involved turning water into wine. It took place at a wedding, before Jesus went completely public with his ministry. However, it revealed to Jesus’ disciples that he was more than a mere Rabbi. He was a miracle worker and they started to believe in him.

The First Outreach – was to Samaritans. This was highly unexpected since Jesus was born a Jew and came to fulfill Jewish expectations for a Messiah. But Jesus came for all people, Jews and Gentiles. Stopping at Samaria so early in his ministry made this point clear.

The First Turning Point – “From that time on” were words used in Matthew’s Gospel (4:17) to announce when Jesus formerly began to preach about the Kingdom of God. Until this point, he had been preparing. Now he was ready to go – No turning back!
