... and the events that led up to it

Read the Summary

The Last Supper – that Jesus ate with his disciples took place at the Passover, an annual Jewish festival, celebrating the deliverance of God’s people from slavery in Egypt. Jesus took the occasion to illustrate how his own sacrifice would truly set people free.

The “Last” Prayers – that Jesus spoke took place in anticipation of his death. In one of them he prayed, “The hour has come. Glorify your Son that your Son may glorify you.” (John 17:1) In the other he said, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup (of suffering) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39) He was ready to die, but it was not going to be easy.

The Arrest – took place at the end of the day on a Thursday. Judas, one of his own followers failed to understand completely who Jesus was and what he was here to do, so he turned Jesus over to the authorities shortly after his “last” prayer.

The Trials – that Jesus endured took place throughout the night. For his last day on earth, he had no sleep. The authorities bounced him around from one place to another starting with Caiaphas, the high priest. Ultimately, Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor who gave the final command to send him to the cross.

The Crucifixion – took place during the day on Friday. It was not a quick death, but instead lasted for about six hours. It was also a very painful death. The word “Excruciating” comes from the same word as crucifixion, but more than the physical pain was the weight of sin that Jesus took on our behalf. Technically, the last prayer that Jesus prayed on earth was this, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46) When he had said this, he breathed his last.

The Burial – took place before sunset on Friday. A man by the name of Joseph from Arimathea asked Pilate for the body and placed Jesus in newly carved tomb. He was accompanied by another Jewish leader named Nicodemus. Both men were secret followers of Jesus, now willing to show one last act of respect and devotion.
